COWETA COUNTY, Ga. -- An 81-year-old man will undergo a mental evaluation after he allegedly tried to set his 35-year-old girlfriend on fire but instead burned his house down.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon at the couple’s home on Rockaway Road off Elders Mill Road.

Officials said Irvin Riley “IR” Smallwood, 81, doused his girlfriend Barbara Dawn Coker, 35, with gasoline while she was sleeping following an argument, according to the Newnan Times-Herald.

Coker was able to flee the home before being set on fire. The fire gutted the inside of the home.

New species of giant ancient crocodiles, one with boar-like tusks another with a duck-like snout, have been unearthed in the Sahara desert, experts announced today.

Palaeontologists say that the diverse array of fossils offers important clues to why the ancestors of modern crocodiles survived while dinosaurs underwent mass extinction.

The expedition that begun in 2000 found specimens of three new species, nicknamed BoarCroc, RatCroc and PancakeCroc. Many of the fossils were found lying on the surface of a remote, windswept stretch of rock and dunes.

PARIS — A deflected goal in Ireland and a handball in France were enough to help the French reach the World Cup, but Raymond Domenech’s team looks far from convincing and the coach even admitted it was “miraculous” to squeeze through.

France will be in South Africa next year in its fourth consecutive World Cup, but many questions remain whether Domenech’s team has what it takes there after being outplayed by Ireland in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw.

“It was difficult, arduous and sometimes miraculous,” Domenech said. “It was a victory by the skin of our teeth.”
