SAN DIEGO - FBI officials say an elderly, thin, gray-haired man nicknamed the "Geezer Bandit" is responsible for holding up five San Diego-area banks since summer.

Investigators say the man appears to be in his 70s. Officials say that in the most recent robbery Monday, he approached a Bank of America teller in La Jolla, displayed a handgun and asked for cash. He fled on foot.

FBI spokesman Darrell Foxworth says investigators believe the man is also responsible for robbing four other San Diego County banks since Aug. 28.

AFTER a life of crime stretching back 53 years, a 70-year-old German woman was finally behind bars today after pickpocketing a woman 10 years her senior at the bus stop, police said.
The pensioner, not named by police, first came to the attention of authorities in December 1956 and during a prolific career of pilfering had 55 criminal cases brought against her, none of which resulted in a jail term.

Age did not seem to dampen her thieving zeal, however. She was charged 17 times this year alone for a series of petty robberies, including at the nursing home where she resides.

"It was especially dangerous when the 70-year-old had to go into hospital for treatment. During her stay, cash, wallets and medical equipment would regularly vanish from other patients' rooms," the police said.

The artist Gabriel Dishaw spent three weeks working with waste material from old computers to re-create his favourite trainers as “junk art”.

The Nike sculpture is part of a series of shoes by the artist, from Carmel, Indiana, that revisits classic trainer silhouettes.

“I tried to create a complete piece, with both box and shoe,” said Mr Dishaw, who used circuit board parts to give the exact tread of the original trainer.
