The state's turkey supplier Nichols says its Christmas birds are up to 2kg heavier than expected this year thanks mostly to a cooler growing season, according to a report in The Mercury.
Home cooks who ordered a 3kg turkey for Christmas Day are likely to find themselves battling to get a bird that will fit in the oven.
"It's a nightmare," Shane Mundy of Hill Street Gourmet Meats said.
Customers were furious and many had cancelled entire orders of up to $500, including hams and barbecue meats.
"We've had cancelled orders and it means more turkeys that we're going to have to freeze or make sausages with, so we lose money," Mr Mundy said yesterday.

Couples desperate for children are turning to India, where relaxed laws on surrogacy means the business of babies is booming.

In India, a womb can be rented for about $3,000 and in vitro fertilization treatment is a fraction of what it costs in the west.
"My criteria is very strict," Dr. Anup Gupta told Sky News. "The surrogate must be healthy and she must already have a family with at least one or two children of her own, minimum. She must not be doing this primarily for financial reasons but because she wants to help another family."
Gupta says he gets about 15 patients from abroad every month looking for a surrogate.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio woman who asked that police be called after she caught her 6-year-old daughter shoplifting a package of stickers said Wednesday that she was just trying to teach the girl a lesson early in life.
Diane Lyons said she doesn't believe she overreacted when she discovered the girl, Shiane, had taken the $3.11 package of stickers used to make temporary tattoos. An older 10-year-old daughter told Lyons about the theft.
Chief Ronald Yeager of the Carrollton Police Department in eastern Ohio arrived at the Discount Drug Mart Dec. 15 and took the girl to the police station in his cruiser before releasing her to Lyons.

KERRVILLE, Texas — Prosecutors in Kerrville will review the case of a woman accused of calling 911 to complain that her husband refused to eat his dinner.

A police report says the 53-year-old woman at the scene was also yelling "about things that happened two weeks ago."

A pair of 911 calls on Friday, including a hang-up and a woman heard screaming, led to police dispatched to the residence.

Officer Paul Gonzales says police were told by her that "her husband did not want to eat his supper."

Two Kiwi men wearing nothing but their birthday suits have been issued with a warning for riding without protective head gear on a jaunt around a sleepy New Zealand seaside town.
Senior Constable Cathy Duder was patrolling Whangamata, a beach resort in the North Island, on a quiet Monday night when she came across the two nude men, both in their early 20s.
"They were more shocked than I was, trying to cover up their bits and pieces with their hands," Senior Constable Duder told AAP.
When asked for an explanation, the pair replied that "they wanted to experience total freedom".
