BRITAIN may be stuck in recession, but it seems simple acts of kindness are helping to lighten the mood.

Donations to charities are up, big businesses are giving away goods to the needy, and even celebrities such as Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham are extolling the benefits of being nicer to one another.

Social commentators have picked up on the trend, with psychologist and author Robert Holden telling how being kind to someone can act like an anti-depressant for some people.

In a recent article, The Sunday Times' writer Jessica Brinton summed up the mood, saying it was "suddenly rather sexy to be kind".

At stake is the image of Australia's most famous wine and food region, South Australia's Sunday Mail reports.

Plans by fast-food giant McDonald's to open a restaurant in Nuriootpa have upset some of the Barossa's most high-profile food and wine identities, including celebrity cook and food manufacturer Maggie Beer and wine legend Margaret Lehmann.

UK prison guards unwittingly allowed a convicted drug dealer to grow marijuana in his cell - and even decorate a four-foot plant as a Christmas tree.

Gold-toothed Mohamed Jalloh, 28, convinced jail staff for at least five months that his super-powerful crop was only tomato plants.

He got so cocky he put festive decorations on one to brighten up his cell at Verne Prison in Portland, Dorset in southern England. Eventually he was turned in by a jealous inmate, and guards then identified the plants using Google image search.

"You could see the plants from the grounds as his cell looks on to the education department and communal outside area,” a source told The Sun.
