Loneliness, like the flu, is contagious, U.S. research shows.

It can spread among groups of people and women are more likely than men to become "infected," according to researchers at the University of Chicago, the University of California-San Diego and Harvard.

Using data from a large-scale study, they found lonely people tend to transmit their sad feelings to those around them, which eventually led to them being isolated from society.

"We detected an extraordinary pattern of contagion that leads people to be moved to the edge of the social network when they become lonely," said University of Chicago psychologist John Cacioppo, a leading U.S. expert on loneliness.

WORRIED parents are hiring private investigators and buying drug-testing kits to monitor their children.

Several private investigators told The Advertiser parents were turning to them to watch their teenage children, checking for drug use and on their children's friends and associates.

Consequent Security Services owner Neil Gordon said many parents approached him when they felt they had lost touch with their teenagers and Kingswood Investigations executive director Harry Klavins said he had "occasional" inquiries from parents.

A 38-year-old former Miss Argentina has died over the weekend from complications resulting from cosmetic surgery, friends says.

"This woman who had everything is dead because she wanted to have a slightly firmer ass," said Roberto Piazza, a fashion designer and close friend of Solange Magnano.

Magnano, Miss Argentina 1994 and a married mother of eight-year-old twins, went under the knife on Thursday at a plastic surgery centre in Buenos Aires.

She was rushed to the hospital on Friday suffering from a pulmonary embolism, and died on Sunday, her friends said.

"She only underwent the procedure because she thought it was no big deal," said Guillermo Azar, another associate from the fashion world and a close friend of Magnano's.
