Just before Christmas, detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department pried open a crate outside a warehouse to find something they had been chasing for months: an 840-pound Brazilian emerald that had been reported stolen.

Now, if they could just figure out who owns it. So far, at least five people have come forward to say it's theirs.

"It seems like the more we talk to people, the more people claim to have ownership over this thing," said Lt. Thomas Grubb, who heads the sheriff's investigative team on the case. "We haven't determined who's not a suspect, really."

Unable to determine who the real owner is, Lt. Grubb decided to keep the emerald locked up while the investigation proceeds. Meanwhile, a Los Angeles civil court is scheduled to hear from different claimants in the case on Tuesday.

SATC UK-based marketing manager Neil Saunders said the promotion was devised to attract the sector which was still inclined to travel despite the economic downturn.

"It primarily was aimed at the backpackers and adventure market; in the current economic climate, they are a strong market because people will be looking to take a gap year or get away from it," Mr Saunders said.

Eric Dane as Dr McSteamy: Consultant Mark Sloan - otherwise known as McSteamy - suffered a fractured member after indulging in illicit sex in the on-call room According to the search engine Google, two of the three most searched terms at present are "penile fracture" and "broken penis". It follows an episode of Grey's Anatomy, Stairway to Heaven, screened in the US on Thursday, in which consultant Mark Sloan - otherwise known as McSteamy - suffered a fractured penis after indulging in sex in the on-call room with Lexie Grey. According to the episode synopsis on broadcaster ABC's website, the resulting injury sparks intense speculation among colleagues as to who is responsible for his agonising injury. Sloan, played by Eric Dane, who also stars in Marley & Me and X-Men, is generally considered to be one of the programme's principal heart throbs, who has had romantic trysts with a large number of the main female characters. His injury is rare but can occur, although it mainly affects young men during sexual intercourse. Netdoctor.co.uk reports that a fracture can occur when abnormal force is applied to the erect penis, and results in a cracking noise combined with intense pain. It is caused by a "tear in the tunica albuginea, the thick fibrous coat surrounding the corpora cavernosum tissue that produces an erection".

The pair told the Sydney Morning Herald they drank only rainwater and ate small fish regurgitated by seabirds after their Thai fishing boat broke up in huge waves on Dec. 23.
"For 10 days, nothing to eat," one of the men told the paper through an interpreter. "Then two big seabirds came and vomited some small fish-- about six or seven little fish."

...Digging, weeding or mowing the lawn for half an hour reduced men's risk of failing to live up to expectations in bed by more than a third, the survey found.
The same study showed other forms of moderate exercise, such as dancing and cycling, could have similar benefits.
Men who spend even more time in the vegetable patch can more than halve their risk of impotence, researchers at the Medical University of Vienna found in their study.
"Erectile function can be maintained even by low, regular physical activity," concludes the report. "Energy expenditure of as little as 1,000 calories a week reduces the risk. Doctors should use these findings to encourage their patients to do more physical training and adopt a healthier lifestyle."
Impotence is thought to affect one in ten men in Britain at some stage in their life.
Around 30 per cent of cases are due to psychological factors, such as depression or pressure at work.
But the remaining 70 per cent have some underlying physical cause, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
Some doctors believe it is an early sign of heart disease as reduced blood flow to the genitals is a sign of clogged arteries.
Two-thirds of sufferers become depressed.
Although a healthy lifestyle is known to help combat impotence, until now there has no clear indication just how much is needed.
The latest study, published in the journal European Urology, shows men do not have to be keep-fit fanatics to reap the benefits and need to burn just 1,000 calories a week. ...

Seeing things that were not there, hearing voices and sensing the presence of dead people were among the experiences reported. Researchers also found that people drinking as few as three cups of brewed coffee each day may experience mild hallucinations, such as hearing voices that aren't there.

MINORS will be banned from having their nipples and genitals pierced and children under 16 will need parental consent for any other body piercings under new Victorian laws.
From January 1, piercers who give a person aged under 18 an intimate body piercing will risk a $6600 fine.
The same penalty will apply to those who give minors a tattoo or perform scarification, tongue splitting, branding or beading on someone aged under 18.

Attorney-General Rob Hulls said the new laws would help protect young people as body art increased in popularity.
"The possible health implications associated with body piercing can include the transmission of blood-borne viruses, infection, scarring and nerve damage," he said.

Stanley Carter surrendered Friday after police took a dog to search the home in Plains Township, a suburb of Wilkes-Barre about 100 miles north of Philadelphia. He was charged with several counts of burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal trespass.

"When he came down from the attic, he was wearing my daughter's pants and my sweat shirt and sneakers," homeowner Stacy Ferrance said. "From what I gather, he was helping himself to my home, eating my food and stealing my clothes."

Police said the 21-year-old Carter had been staying with his friends, who are Ferrance's neighbors in a duplex. But when they told him to leave, he apparently accessed the shared attic through a trap door in a bedroom ceiling.

A pregnant woman in the U.K. was left unattended for hours and had to give birth on a hospital floor despite her desperate appeal for a bed.

Health board officials have apologized to Lynne Neilson, 36, whose baby started to arrive as she stood, still clothed, in an assessment room at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, a major teaching hospital in Scotland, after hours of waiting to be admitted. As the baby's head appeared, a midwife ran in just in time to put a paper mat on the floor and catch the baby, who had the umbilical cord around her neck.

Neilson and her husband Gavin filed an official complaint after the incident. The U.K.'s National Health Service in the Lothian region of Scotland, which oversees the hospital, is investigating the complaint and has apologized to the woman.

AN insane killer who stabbed his wife to death has won the right to drive a cab - but passengers are not allowed to know his identity.

A tribunal granted the man taxi accreditation despite pleas from Victoria's Director of Public Transport to ban him from the roads. A Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal order prevents the Herald Sun revealing the name of the driver, known only as 'XFJ'.

VCAT deputy president Michael Macnamara said in his decision that XFJ's violent history raised a significant safety issue for taxi passengers.
